Sabin Collective

“I cherish being given the opportunity to explore further the design and research of seaweed materials during my time at Rumah Hujan. Being inspired by the breathtaking natural surroundings, where the beautifully crafted architecture became a space for innovation, echoing the symphony of design and nature's allure. Each object's creation is testament to the boundless creativity inspired by the world around me.”

Indonesian Material Researcher Talisa Dwiyani of Sabin Collective divides her time between Ubud, Bali and Helsinki, Finland. With a background in architecture, she now dedicates her time to researching and developing biomaterials from sources like seaweed, kombucha, agar and rice straw.

Visiting the Sabin Collective studio in Nyuh Kuning, Bali, where Talisa Dwiyani spends her time inventing and experimenting with biomaterials, feels like getting a sneak peek into a more hopeful future. Bioplastics in jewel shades of teal, emerald green, dark orange and speckled nudes impress with their beautiful transparent textures; feather light puffed up white seaweed plastic the look and texture of Styrofoam has you wishing for a more sophisticated tomorrow where this material could come to replace its more toxic predecessor. Thick and resilient leather like materials made from kombucha makes you wonder if leather from animal sources, or the damaging plastic leather alternative, will be a thing of the past.

Rumah Hujan invited Talisa Dwiyani from Sabine Collective to spend her time with us going deeper into her research and her experiments with biomaterial design.
